The Parasitology Section of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center is a full-service parasite diagnostic laboratory capable of diagnosing infections in domestic and wild animals. This service is provided in an accurate, timely and cost efficient manner. Accurate identification of parasites benefits animals, their owners and veterinarians by helping to improve animal health. The Assistant Supervisor will be a working member of the technical team and support the management of the Parasitology Section. Supervisory responsibilities include distributing daily work assignments, training staff, and reviewing work. Responsibilities also include assisting the Director with the coordination of laboratory human resources matters, evaluating staffing needs, recruitment and hiring of staff, conflict resolution and performance management. Technical responsibilities include performing a range of parasitological and immunological tests on clinical specimens (i.e., feces, blood, urine, tracheal washes, duodenal aspirates, skin scrapings, and environmental samples such as soil), which may contain potentially infectious agents, to aid in the diagnosis of parasitic infections in domestic and wild animals. Techniques used include centrifugation concentration flotation, serum and fecal ELISAs, and specialized staining techniques. Experience working with light microscopes is essential for this position. Will be required to participate in holiday rotation. Employees of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center are required to receive rabies and hepatitis vaccinations. Employee will demonstrate proficiency with all AHDC systems, procedures and policies. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or a closely related field with at least 6 years of laboratory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The ability to collaborate with others, work within a quality system and mus tpossess superior written, verbal and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently, to respond quickly and effectively to multiple assignments, and manage conflicting priorities and situations with strong attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and respect highly confidential information. Possess excellent organizational skills, sound reasoning and analytical skills. Committed to continuous learning. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time at laboratory benches or microscopes. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of computer software (i.e., Windows, Word, Excel, Access) preferred. Experience working in a human or veterinary diagnostic laboratory or veterinary clinical setting and previous work with infectious agents are preferred. Background check may be required .
